Welcome to the website of Canadian artist, Janet Moore

I have explored many ways of making art over the 40 years of my career and the common thread that is woven through these years of “making” is a desire to explore my connection to the earth through this female body I inhabit. I interpret what I see and the emotions I feel through my heart and hands as I experience the world that surrounds me. Although this exploration has taken me on a journey that includes sculptural fabric installation, painting in both abstract format as well as detailed realism and mixed media, my approach of layering whichever media(s) I have selected, delves into what appears on the surface and also what lays beneath.

Fire & Smoke

In 2023, a devastating wildfire ripped through a portion of my community in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. Along with my neighbours, I was evacuated for three long and anxious weeks. From the other side of the harbour we watched smoke plumes fill the air and flames light the night air as the fire quickly advanced to our coastal area. When the all-clear was given to return to our homes, my house still stood, but 60 of my neighbors were less fortunate. The Fire & Smoke Collection attempts to capture the unimaginable devastation and awful beauty of our county on fire.

This spring, Studio 135 in Shelburne, NS, will host an exhibition, Fire & Smoke: Watching the Shelburne County Wildfires, from May 27th to June 17th.

Terra Nova Scotia

This series of abstractions is based on the land, suggesting movement and moments in time; elements are often based on memories of place and feelings, both visceral and emotional. They are a bridge between what is formed and the formless, all evoked by place: Terra Nova Scotia.
