Abstracts

I often begin a mixed media abstract by using my own hand-made papers that have been created by casting cotton pulp over flat objects. This technique creates a permanent impression in the dried paper. When collaged on the surface as a first layer, subtle lines and shapes are created.  Layers of paint and mark-making with graphite, charcoal, and more collage with other homemade papers follow until each mixed media painting finds completion. I love the process of adding to a surface and then scraping back to reveal what’s beneath when composing. The application of paint is an intuitive process where one action leads to the next. The endpoint is multi-layered and full of small surprises on close inspection.
