By selecting felt: the warm pliable and ancient fabric made from wool, I am exploring my northern European and Celtic roots. I am divining my identity – female, active, powerful, alive and earthen. I am exploring a specific locale and the structure of the enclosure captures the interwoven character of this special place, this special womanhood. The felted figures are female. My daughter, five years old at the time, let me make two body casts of her, which I then used to make the child figures. My mother died just before I started this project and the whole idea of transformation, change, flow, transition and the body, was very much on my mind. She, my mother, was my physical doorway onto this planet as I have been just that for my own daughter. I was profoundly aware of how the planet had shifted ever so slightly when my doorway to this existence had closed.
